It corresponds to the first division national football championship. In other words, it brings together the best professional teams in Portugal.
This championship has 18 participating teams every year.
It starts in August of one year and ends in May of the following year.
Therefore, at the moment the 2022/2023 season is already well advanced, so much so that it is in its 21st round. In total, there are 34 rounds.
The competition is for straight points. At the end of all rounds, whoever scores the most points becomes champion and lifts the Portuguese Championship cup.
Both first and second placed teams guarantee places in the UEFA Champions League.
On the other hand, the third-placed team competes in the qualifying round of the competition.
Furthermore, the two worst placed teams in the Portuguese Championship are relegated to the second division, being replaced by the top two placed teams.
